George Crocker was the resident orderly at Frome police station, Christchurch Street West, where his son Arthur was born in 1903
Arthur’s natural storytelling was inspired by the police station drama, trials and triumphs at school, love of Frome market, and his numerous gritty jobs within and beyond the Police Station Precinct. Through five autobiographical cameos of his colourful childhood from 1910-1919, he paints an atmospheric portrait of bustling life in Edwardian Frome, set against the dramatic impact of WW1. Witty, serious, and articulate: he started writing after his parents died in the 1950’s.
“What a delight to read these pages and to allow the imagination to wander back in time. The writing is witty and observant. Arthur is a natural stroryteller.“
Kylie Fitzpatrick – Historical fiction author and creative writing mentor
